Midnight mass hid a twist with Erin’s baby

Erin Greene’s baby seems to have a tragic ending on Netflix Midnight massBut the show could be hiding a twist on its vampire lore. Midnight mass puts a new twist on vampire stories. In the show, a charismatic young priest named Father Paul (Hamish Linklater) arrives on Crockett Island and immediately does terrible things. In reality, Father Paul is secretly Crockett Island’s former spiritual leader, Monsignor Pruitt, and the ingestion of blood from a vampire restored him to youth. Pruitt took the vampire with him to the island, thinking it was an angel, and the creature is different enough from a traditional vampire that many of his congregation accept the idea. Because the vampire restored Pruitt’s life, the priest is on a mission to distribute vampire blood to the entire island and save his old parish. Though things start out promisingly, with vampire blood restoring the city and curing diseases, things quickly go awry.

Midnight mass does not connect directly to The curse of Hill House or The curse of Bly Manor. Still, the show borrows several elements from creator Mike Flanagan’s previous Netflix series. For example, several actors return. Kate Siegel (Hill house, Bly manor) theater plays Erin Greene, a future mother who escapes an abusive past; Rahul KohliBly manor) theater plays Sheriff Hassan, a Muslim whose promising career is destroyed by discrimination; and Samantha Sloyan (Hill house) plays Bev Keane, a possibly sinister member of St. Patrick’s Church. Further, Midnight mass brings back various beats from the history of previous shows, such as having a character, Riley Flynn (Zach Gilford), who is physically haunted by his past mistakes.

Although After midnightIf season 1 seems to tell a full story, the show can also hide the mother of all twists. At the beginning of the series, Erin Greene is pregnant and regularly visits the doctor to check on her baby. However, after receiving the vampire blood through Holy Communion at Mass, her baby suddenly disappears from her womb. Dr. Sarah Gunning (Annabeth Gish) cannot explain the sudden disappearance and even shows Erin the ultrasound image, revealing her empty uterus. Later, another doctor tells Erin that it doesn’t look like she was pregnant at all. After learning of the mysterious healing effects of vampire blood on the residents of Crockett Island, Dr. Gunning believes that the blood destroyed Erin’s baby. According to Dr. Gunning, a fetus is like a “alien presence“in the body, and the blood probably acted aggressively towards him. However, there may also be another explanation: Erin’s baby never went anywhere.

Erin’s baby didn’t die; it was simply undetectable because it was a vampire. In vampire lore, the creatures often don’t appear in photos, which could explain what’s going on with Erin’s missing baby. He was in Erin’s womb the entire time, but the ultrasound machine just couldn’t detect his vampire presence. After all, during the appointment where Dr. Gunning can’t find the baby, Erin says her future son was kicking as usual. According to Erin, the baby kicks “like a butterfly with little legs,“And she didn’t notice any difference in the last 24 hours before the appointment. So if the baby is still moving, it’s probably there. The medical equipment just wasn’t designed to control vampires.

The theory is not perfect. After all, ultrasound machines don’t work like cameras. Instead, they use sound to create an image, so even a vampire fetus could appear. Also, Erin really thinks she lost the baby on the show. Nevertheless, Midnight mass play by his vampire rules. For example, the vampire on the show doesn’t even have fangs. And other vampire shows, like the British series Ultraviolet, have shown that creatures can be invisible to electronic devices. So, given all the evidence, the theory, and Erin’s baby, they could be alive and well.
